Sisters Are Gathering

Walking back from my studio a couple of nights after the Harvest Moon, the still-bright moonlight was suddenly obscured by a series of fast moving shadows.  Quickly lifting my camera, I managed to catch the last one of a magnificent procession of witches flying through the sky.  I heard their melodic laughter, slipping back faintly to me on the night breeze, and their words: "See you on Halloween, sister!"

I Wish...

I was on my way to a luncheon at the home of a friend of a friend today.  While looking for the address I came across this great street name sign.  Of course, I had to get out of the car and take a photo.  As soon as I left the car and approached the street sign a man came out of a house across from the sign and called to me, "Leave that sign alone!"  I told him I was just planning on taking a picture of it and that was all.  That mollified him, so I asked if they had had trouble with people defacing the sign.  He replied, "No...we have trouble with people stealing it!"  He said it had been stolen so many times the county now refused to make a new sign with the name stamped in the metal and just lettered over old street signs.

I wish whoever was in charge of street names way back in the 1920's when my cottage was built would have given the street it's on a name as cool as this one.  I also wonder how Willow Witch Road got this particular name.  And, I wonder what it takes to get the name of a street changed, or if it even can be?

I have some sleuthing to do!

This 'n That

This little witch and her cat are one of my favorite Halloween decorations. She's actually fairly large; 16" in diameter. I think I might paint her hair a lovely shade of red, though. She's far too young to have grey hair!
This is a spice cake with cream cheese frosting that my husband made for my birthday, which was several days ago. How sweet was that? And what a wise man; he used just a few candles. If he had used the number that matches my age, the house probably would have caught fire!

A cup of tea in a Halloween mug was the perfect complement to a slice of the cake...which I was so eager to eat that I didn't take a picture of it. Ah well, just trust me when I say it was delicious!

In Praise of Eccentricity

While out driving around with a friend, I passed this sign. I thought it was charmingly eccentric, my friend didn't care for it. (Not the sign itself. She just doesn't like any sort of yard decoration).

I've always been drawn to eccentric people. I find them, usually, more interesting than people who are strictly conventional. But that is not to say that I don't know or like any interesting, conventional people, I do.

Most of the women in my family, and extended family, could be called 'eccentric' and they would take it as a compliment. I think it takes a certain amount of courage to be eccentric, especially if you're a woman, even in current times. Of course, in times not too far past, it was risky, even life-threatening, for either gender to be anything other than exactly like their neighbors. I'm so glad I don't live in times like those; I'm not sure I would have survived!
