I'm Watching You...

This is a Steller's Jay.  I love their beautiful blue colors; unfortunately I can't say the same for their voice.  They have a harsh sounding caw most of the time, but sometimes they do make quiet little whortling, churring, and squeaking sounds.  They only make these sounds when they're by themselves, so I suppose they're talking to themselves.  They're great imitators.  This one (I don't know if it is a male or female since, unlike most bird species, they both look the same) always imitates the sound of a hawk when it comes to the feeders.  Of course all the other birds flee and it has the feeders all to itself.  Clever bird!

  2. Ooooo, thanks so much for sharing this picture ... I do so love wild birds ... in fact, I believe no birds should be pets .... they should be free and flying all over the place.

    Love and Light to all.

  3. Queenie, I've had them dive at me when I'm sitting in my garden and snatch a cookie right out of my hand!

ArtSings, I agree with you. No birds, or wild animals, should ever be caged.

  4. Haha, very smart birds. Jays are part of the corvid family and are related to crows. We know how smart those beauties are. Lovely picture.

  5. We have some blue jays in the trees behind our condo. These past few weeks they are making more noise then normal. Finally, I found out why. The little babies were now big babies that still had to be fed by mom and dad. So the babies(almost full grown) were flapping their wings and screaming for more food. It was very interesting to watch!
