The Last Evening of Summer

These lovely clouds were floating about today, but not a drop of rain did they share.  The setting sun painted them in spectacular colors as the birds sang their evening 'good-night' songs.

Though it doesn't feel all that much like autumn here yet, there are reminders that summer is making her departure, albeit very reluctantly.  The birds of summer, the Grosbeaks, Rufus Sided Towhees, and Bullocks Orioles,  have been gone for several weeks, leaving the forest to the birds that live here year round: Steller's Jays, Chickadees, Rosy Finches, Acorn and Gilded Flicker woodpeckers, Red Breasted and White Breasted Nuthatches, Juncos and Ravens.  It's been a bit cooler, especially at night, and some of the leaves are starting to turn colors.

This has been the warmest summer we've ever experienced, and I'm not one bit sorry to see her leave.  I just wish she'd hurry up!

  2. Thanks so much for this wonderful post ... I do so enjoy reading how your life is in northern California ... it's been getting "cool" here in central Florida, it actually went below 90 degrees !

    Love Always,

  3. Those clouds are just beautiful. The Evening Grosbeaks have arrived here and will take advantage of the feeders over the winter. I'm sad to see summer go as it's been the best one in many years however fall here is lovely and the weather is still wonderful.

  4. B'ham, I'm glad you liked it!

Jan, I'm glad you liked it, too. (I actually live in the mountains of Southern California, not Northern California).

Thanks, OC. I wish we had Evening Grosbeaks here. We have the black and orange kind, but I can't remember the exact name. Black Headed Grosbeaks? Black Capped Grosbeaks? I'll have to look it up.
