Thoughts on Black Friday

"Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don't have on something they don't need."  Will Rogers

Will Rogers, an early 20th century humorist and social commentator who also happened to be Cherokee, pretty much sums up the way I feel about Black Friday.

In addition to that, I have a question.  Why has shopping turned into combat?  I read about the craziness at the malls and I have to wonder why anyone would want to participate in that mess.  I can understand wanting to get a good deal on the things that one buys, but numerous studies have proven that there are far better deals to be had on other days of the year.

I just don't get it.

  1. Madness. I haven't been to a real mall in at least ten years. And I NEVER got into the post Thanksgiving shopping scrum. Still, there are some who view it as sport and others who see it as necessity -- how can they get that giant flat screen TV except when it's on sale.

We make most of our gifts and I shop at independent book stores and local craft stores for others. I get kinda shuddery imagining having to go to a big box store on Black Friday.

  2. Vicki, I get that same shuddery feeling when I imagine shopping at big box stores on Black Friday. Or at anytime, for that matter. I make most of my gifts, too.

  3. All I can say about this is "ditto"
I have to say, being so broke has made us be more aware and also to get out of spending so much. We will never buy without thinking things through even when our ship comes in.
