Columbus Day?

Sorry, Mr. Columbus. My ancestors got here before about 30,000 years. The Vikings got here before you did. Heck, even some Irish monks got here before you did.

Which is why it really ticks me off that I can't pick up a package that I've been waiting for from the Post Office today. It's closed in your honor. Hmmm...'honor' and 'Christopher Columbus.' Now, there are words that really don't belong in the same sentence.

I'm part Italian (Northern Italy) and I'm proud of that. Italians have contributed a great deal to the richness of the cultural heritage of this country. But you? Pah. Believe me, my Italian Nonna would really have some things to say to you that you wouldn't like, and, I imagine, so would her husband, an Oglala Sioux.

  1. Well said, Victoria. Culture began with Columbus, eh?

Actually, I have suspicions that the whole Columbus story, as it's enshrined in school textbooks, doesn't add up. I keep meaning to do some digging.

  2. ha love it when you get your Italian Oglala up!

  3. Brilliant!! I am Norwegian and proud of that :) I dislike that we remember the violent person who wasn't even a real discoverer. I think we should have holidays in memory of the Native Americans. They are much more interesting and can teach us so much!! :) Blessings

  4. Thank you for this. You have put into words what i wish I could shout out at everyone who thinks Columbus shaould be honored

  5. Thanks everyone, it's great to know that I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate it!
