The bird on the left is a Steller's Jay, the Western version of the Blue Jay. Amazingly, the bird on the right is a Rosy House Finch! Only he isn't rosy, he's yellow in the places where he should be a rosy red. I thought a new species of bird was visiting my feeders but when I looked it up on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology I found out that sometimes young male house finches can have yellow or orange where the red feathers should be until they reach maturity. Too bad they can't keep their yellow or orange coloring because you know what they say...variety is the spice of life!
Variety is the spice of life, so true, otherwise it's the same ol' boring story.
ReplyDeleteVictoria - this was interesting about the finch...never knew that their colors change as they mature. Makes sense though - I think our plumage changes too as we mature (LOL)- I know mine has. We have the blue jays here but not the stellar ones...looks like they are a deeper blue.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to visit me too - have a great day.
Debbie, my plumage has changed, too...along with a lot of other things, lol.
ReplyDeleteLove learning this about the house finch. And like you and Debbie, my plumage too has changed.
