The Blizzard of 2023

The month of March was brutal.  It started snowing on February 23rd and didn’t stop until over 8 feet of snow had accumulated.  Five feet of it fell in a 24 hour period.  This photo is looking out from my studio window during a break in the middle of the storm.  Thank God I could get out to it to paint, it saved my sanity.  Nearly two weeks of not seeing another human being, no plows clearing the road, just snow, snow and more snow was stressful, to say the least.

The roof of our only grocery store in Crestline, Goodwin’s Market, collapsed due to the weight of the snow.  They estimate it will take a year to rebuild.  Only the outside walls remain.

Roofs all over the mountain collapsed.  The last time we saw this much snow up here was the winter of 1982-83.

Thankfully, the roof on my 115 year old cottage held up just fine, and so did the roof of my studio, probably because the pitch of both is so steep.  I did have to shovel off the roof of the cottage’s front porch though because it’s fairly flat.

The street in front of my house.  The fence across the street is 7 and a half feet tall, you can just see the top of it peeking out.

I kept the birds, squirrels, feral cats, skunks and raccoons fed during the storm and they all made it though just fine.  And, all of us who live inside my little cottage made it through just fine, too.

And now the snow is melting and the creeks and lakes are full.  Every cloud has a silver lining, as my Mama used to say.

Nothing is blooming up here yet, but the flowers at lower elevations are truly spectacular.

If I never see this much snow again it wouldn’t bother me a bit.  Although, it’s really not the amount of snow that was so hard to deal with, it’s the fact that the County of San Bernardino was so slow in getting the roads plowed.  People died up here because of the County’s negligence.  (I thank whoever build my little cottage all those years ago for putting in a fireplace and a gas floor furnace).Trees and power lines came down and Edison couldn’t get in to fix anything because the roads weren’t cleared.  People couldn’t get out to get medications and died.  People ran out of food.  People who lived in all electric houses, and so had no heat, froze to death.  The County is trying to say that all of the deaths that happened up here during the blizzard are not storm related, but we all know that’s a lie.  During the blizzard of 1982-83 the roads were, mostly, cleared within three days because the plows were out working night and day, and that’s the way it has always been up here.  As soon as it started snowing, the plows were working.  But not during this storm.  I’m near town, one of the first places normally to be plowed, but my road wasn’t plowed for 10 days!  Sadly, probably nothing will happen to the people who were responsible for the County’s poor response because that’s the way things seem to be nowadays.

I’m looking forward to when the lilacs that are all around my cottage bloom and I can pick bouquets.  The leaves are already showing some green, so maybe in a few more weeks they’ll bloom.  I can’t wait!  Spring has never been so welcome.

Can You...

Spot Mrs. Coyote in this photo?
She's in the red circle.  I didn't really spot her when I took this photo; I just liked the sun and shadows.  When she started down the little slope I spotted her.
These photos were taken in late spring a couple of years ago, but I know that the coyote family is still up on the hillside above me because I hear them singing every now and then.
This is a corner of my art studio in the early morning sun.  The flowers aren't real but I think they look pretty with the sunlight shining on them.

Morning Light

Morning sunlight shining through my studio's windows brought out the light faeries.
They're very elusive creatures, only coming out when the atmosphere is just right.
When they appear in the house my cats love to chase them but, happily for the faeries, my studio is a fur-free zone.

"I beg your pardon!  I have fur, and so do many others who live here, Victoria!  Fur free zone indeed."

Oops...

Morning in the Studio

Morning sun shining through my studio's largest window looks so pretty...
Especially the sparkly bits.
It made a pretty butterfly (sort of) at the bottom of the glass.
It pointed out something I'd never noticed before...the cuts at the very bottom of the glass look like tiny, clear butterflies.

Blue Light

I was in my studio for a while during Christmas Eve afternoon, the day it snowed.
I decided to turn out all the lights and take some photos just using the tree lights and the snow light coming in through the windows..
A strange thing was happening...
There are no blue ornaments on this tree, but somehow the camera was making some of the ornaments blue!
And, not always the entire ornament, but just in spots.  Pretty, but very strange...

Lilac Love

I picked some lilacs for my studio...
Their scent is so wonderful.  I wish someone would make an air freshener spray that really smelled like lilacs.
They looked so pretty in their little jugs and vases, I took their photos.

Done!

In the studio, anyway.  Of course, it's always decorated for Christmas/Winter in the studio, so it's always done.  Notice I'm not showing you my work area.  That's because it's a mess...like it usually is.  I think the last time it was absolutely pristine like this:

was in 2012, which is when this photo was taken.  I had to clean it really well because that was the year I participated in "Where Bloggers Create" blog party.  (You can see the whole post by scrolling to the bottom of the page.  The buttons for the blog parties that I participated in are all there).

Rain, Wonderful Rain

Thank you for all of your good rain wishes; they worked!  Please, don't stop wishing for rain for California yet, though...

I spent the day in my studio, listening and watching the rain.  If you look closely when you enlarge the photo, you'll be able to see a few streaks of rain and drops on the cherry blooms and leaves.  It was raining hard when I took this from inside my studio, but, try as I might, my camera just wouldn't capture the rain properly.

It rained all last night and we had terrible howling winds (gusts of 90 mph) but today the winds went away to make mischief somewhere else and the rain stopped blowing sideways.  Listening to it last night I was sure all the cherry blossoms would be gone today, but they're still here (knock on wood, as my mom used to say).  They weren't even harmed by the hail and sleet.  Neither were the emerging Pacific dogwood flowers:

I love how they emerge a bright, lime green; it's like they're shouting, "Yay!  Spring is here and so are we!"  They slowly, as they become bigger, turn a light cream color.

I spent most of the day alternately enjoying the sight of rain, the sound of rain singing along with the crackling of the fire and cleaning my studio (which I didn't enjoy so much, but it really needed it).  I finally hooked up my pretty, antique-style phone which is a land-line phone.  I previously had a portable phone, but I got tired of it not working every time the power went out.  My cell phone is useless up at the studio; well, cell phones are useless in a lot of areas up here in the mountains.

Now I'm going to sit by the fire and listen to the rain and drink a cup of tea...come have a cup with me!

Faeries Friday - Christmas Faeries

My studio was full of sparkles and stars today (no, I didn't hit my head on anything...honest).  I'm sure the sparkles were made by the Christmas Faeries who are everywhere this time of year, zipping about sparkling the world with Christmas happiness.  If you see a tiny twinkle from the corner of your eye, or think you've spotted a stray piece of glitter, chances are good that you've caught a glimpse of a Christmas Faery.

There is one sure way to tell, however, if you've been in the presence of a Christmas Faery: you'll feel a nearly overwhelming feeling of joy, quickly followed by an absolutely irresistible urge to go out and commit random acts of kindness.

I hope the Christmas Faeries visit you!

I See You

(Blogger cut off part of this photo, so left click to see the whole photo). I took this while I was sitting working on a painting in my studio.  The big window I sit in front of faces out onto my little fenced in 'secret garden' area and the forest.  I've taken to keeping my camera handy lately after years of looking up from working and thinking 'Oh, that would be a wonderful photo, if only I had my camera...'
These two photos are a little blurry, but I'm amazed they came out at all.  The Dogwood tree the butterfly is sitting in is about 60 feet away and it was windy on the day I took this.  There is a Dogwood right outside the window, but, of course, it wouldn't land there.
This is one of the biggest Swallowtail Butterflies I've ever seen.  It's on the leaf of a Pacific Dogwood, which is the only kind of Dogwood indigenous to the West, and their leaves average about 5 to 6 inches across.
The only problem now that I'm keeping my camera close by is that I'm doing more looking than painting!  And, apparently, being looked at...

What Happened to Winter?

The tree in my studio, which I leave up year round, is always decorated in a winter theme and, right now, it's about the only thing around here that does look like winter. We haven't had any snow, or even rain, since about December 15.
The temperatures are abnormally high; today it was 65 F (18 C) degrees! It has been really cold at night; our low temps have been in the teens and high twenties Fahrenheit.
If you have any rain or snow to spare, please send it out to Southern California? I promise you, we'll really, REALLY appreciate it!

A Spring Walk, Part One

On my walk yesterday I saw lots of Baby Blue Eyes, huge patches of them. However, a picture of a huge patch washes the flowers out to white. Does anyone know why they're called Baby Blue Eyes? I've always wondered. The flowers are small, only about the size of a man's thumbnail.

Baby Oak tree leaves were springing out all over, giving the oak trees a reddish haze around them. These are California White Oaks. The Ponderosa Pines are making new cones. They're so strange looking! More Lunaria all over the place. I just love it. Wild Columbine (sorry, this is a terrible picture; I had seen an animal friend in the distance and I wanted to get out of her way. I'll post the animal friends I met along the way tomorrow). Wild Sweet Pea. The scent of this is heavenly, much more intense than the hybridized varieties. Lots of California Wild Lilac (Caenothus) both white and lavender blue. It doesn't smell like lilacs at all, but has a very faint, sweet scent. White Caenothus above, blue below.

Lots of apple blossoms on the trees close to my studio and cottage. AND... this year there are lots of bees! Last year there were hardly any. I'm always so glad to see bees, even if nary a one would pose for a photo. It was warm yesterday! The dogs were fine, they'd had drinks of cool, clear creek water along the way, but I was looking forward to a glass of iced tea when we got home. (The upper part of my studio door. The writing on the tin flower holder reads 'Fleurs' which is French for 'flowers' but it has always looked like 'Heurs' to me...which is I don't know what!).
